There are so many cleaning solutions on the supermarket shelves. It can be quite daunting, not to mention expensive, finding which one works best.
One of the toughest areas to get sparkling clean has to be the cooker hob. Fat splashes and greasy foods all contribute to make it hard to clean without quite a bit of effort and time.
I’m always on the lookout for new and inexpensive cleaning products that work exceptionally well. I discovered this magic liquid in my local Home Bargains shop.
To be honest, at only 95p for 500ml I didn’t hold out too much hope! Now, I am so glad that I took the plunge and invested in a bottle!
What is Elbow Grease?
Elbow Grease is actually described as and ‘all purpose degreaser’. It is ideal for removing grease from kitchen surfaces and can even be used to remove grease spots from fabrics and porous material.
It’s tough enough to remove grease from engines and machinery yet gentle enough to use on fabric
So, time to put it to the test!
I decided to start with the kitchen surfaces, nothing too difficult. A quick spray and a wipe down with a microfiber cloth and the surface was really clean in no time at all.
Now, I keep my hob clean but the cast iron pan supports, although washed regularly, still get a built up of fine grease over time and can look a little shabby.
If it works on this I thought, I’ll be sold!!!
Well…it worked alright ?
All traces of grease were gone and with no more effort than spraying the Elbow Grease onto a scrubby sponge (to get into all the nooks and cranny’s) then washing off with hot water.
OK, I’m sold already and planning to go back to the shop and stock up before they sell out! But I decided to really test this stuff and see what happens when I try cleaning the oven racks with it.
The Ultimate Test!
Oven racks are the bane of every cooks life. Too hot to wash them after cooking a meal and often forgotten when cool enough to handle safely.
As we cook from scratch everyday and bake all of our own bread (see our recipes for How To Make Delicious Homemade Crusty Bread In Your Stand Mixer & Easy Wholemeal Bread) our oven is always hot!
Even though they are washed regularly, the fine grease from roasting soon gets baked on and hard to remove.
In the past the way we tackled the racks was to use household ammonia. We put the racks into a large black dustbin liner with a cupful of ammonia and sealed the top. The smell was awful!!!
This would be left overnight and next day the bag was ripped open (that smell again!). The racks were rinsed to remove the ammonia. Then we set to work with steel wool to remove the now softened tough bits. A lot of unpleasant work!
So I did the same as with the hob pan supports and sprayed the Elbow Grease onto a scrubby sponge and coated the metal racks.
This time I left them on the draining board for 10 minutes so the Elbow Grease could work it’s magic.
When I returned a lot of the liquid had dripped off…taking the majority of the grease with it – what a result!
A quick wipe over with the scrubby sponge and the racks were gleaming ?
Where to buy
I honestly urge you to track down a bottle of this amazing cleaner. You should be able to find it in places like Home Bargains and The Range.
I’ve included a link to Amazon to illustrate what the product looks like and for those who cannot find it locally. It is more expensive from here but well worth it!
Save yourself time and effort with some Elbow Grease!
